POTD 27.02.19 - Toronto Snow Day

Yesterday we were blasted with a ton of snow… like a lot. We crushed the previous record for February 27, which was set in 2013. 12.4 cm was the last record and it was the greatest snowfall on record since 1938! We destroyed that record. There were spots in the city that had up to 20 cm of the white stuff. The extreme weather we are experiencing more recently is probably super normal and definitely not global warming *hard eye roll*. Yesterday I resisted the urge to stay inside and got out to capture this epic snow event. Here are a couple of the stills I captured.

I survived this snowmageddon and I’m happy to report that it has stopped snowing and is now a sunny and beautiful day.

Blasted by Winter at the Winter Stations

Wind and blowing snow at Woodbine Beach. This Winter Station seems to be holding up pretty well, but it’s signage has seen better days.

I have been waiting for some winter weather to hit before I got out to photograph this years Winter Stations at Woodbine Beach. I thought I might have been SOL since just yesterday I was out at the beach for a run and it was mighty sunny, it felt well above 0°C and all the snow was melting. This year I guess I would be taking some spring-themed Winter Station photos, but lo’ and behold! This afternoon the winter weather came in with a vengeance. It was a little chilly at first, but the sun was shining. Within a few minutes of walking around the wind started to pick up and the snow really started to blow. I got my wintery Winter Station images, hooray! These came at a price though. I wasn’t really expecting this weather so I was caught shooting glove-less. Usually not a big deal. However, this time I had the weirdest thing happen to my hands. After I got back in from the cold they swelled up. I’ve been out in the cold shooting with thin gloves or no gloves lots of times before, in far worse weather too, but I have never experienced this phenomenon before. I found it comical how big they got. Luckily once I ran them under some warm water they went back down to their normal size.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy these wintery Winter Station images, I almost lost my hands for these ones!

Dogsledding in Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve

A perfect mix of cute canines and winter sport, dogsledding is the quintessential Canadian Experience. These handsome hounds aren’t your typical household pets though - they’re elite athletes that live to run. I was lucky enough to join one of these packs of pups on a dogseld tour through the Haliburton Forest. Dashing through the snow on a six dog open sleigh! This might be one of my favourite winter activities ever. I’m excited to share a few of pics that I snapped along the way. Click below to see the full images and captions.

Edible Toronto: Canadian Ginger Company

I shot a handful of stills for a magazine called Edible Toronto. Talia and I traveled out to the Canadian Ginger Company to meet the owner and get the tour of facility. The farm was located out by Caledonia, Ontario. Before this shoot I guess I had never seen fresh ginger because the ginger I know and love is always brown and barky. Fresh from the ground it is a vibrant pink and yellow. Super cool.

Be sure to pick up this issue of Edible Toronto to see these images in print, or check out the Digital Edition. Also, if you’re looking to stock up on some ginger head to the Canadian Ginger Company’s website and place an order!

Purification Palace POTD 01.01.19

New year, new post. Happy New Year!

It looks like a high security prison, but it actually provides 45% of Toronto’s and York Region’s water. I’ve always found The R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant to be visually interesting. It feels very out of place and a little menacing. I guess that’s why it’s been used as a prison in the movie “Half Baked” and an evil headquarters in “Undercover Brother”. It definitely exudes that villainous hide-out vibe.
